Ari Korpivaara

Ari Korpivaara, director of publications at the Open Society Foundations, has written and produced reports, newsletters, brochures, and other printed matter for civil liberties and human rights causes for over 30 years. He first worked with Open Society Foundations President Aryeh Neier as publications director at the American Civil Liberties Union and rejoined him in 1993 to help build and promote open societies.

In between he consulted for numerous foundations, including the Aaron Diamond, Nathan Cummings, and Geraldine R. Dodge. His publications for Open Society and others have received more than a dozen Council on Foundations awards for excellence. He has previously worked for the Herald Tribune and Associated Press, handled sound for a documentary film crew traveling around the world, worked off his fare on freighters crossing the Atlantic, and served in the Finnish navy. His stories, including interviews with French film actresses and Louisiana sweet potato farmers, appeared in publications ranging from Ms. Magazine to the Finnish daily Aamulehti.
